Preparing for the PSSA in First Grade

In first grade, the students will begin preparing for
the third grade PSSA test in a variety of ways.

First graders will work on the following reading skills:
· Comparing nonfiction and fiction texts
· Reading and understanding content area texts
· Reading independently

In first grade math, students will be concentrating on the following skills:
· Understanding and solving word problems
· Developing their understanding of estimation
· Exploring geometrical shapes

Writing will be taught through an innovative writing program called "Kid Writing." Your children also used "Kid Writing" in kindergarten. "Kid Writing" will focus on paragraph writing, content, organization, and style.

The first grade teachers intend to work as a team with all of the teachers of Ebner Elementary to help our students will be prepared for the PSSA testing.
