Welcome to First Grade! Here are some expectations for a busy year of learning:
Reading
First grade is the most exciting year regarding reading. Students enter the classroom learning to read and quickly transition to reading to learn! We will read each and every day in school. Students should practice sounding out and recognizing high frequency words. Leveled Literacy is now a school-wide tool that will allow your child to read and develop skills at his/her specific level. Look for a book to come home to practice fluency and comprehension.
Math
The math topics covered will include Decomposing Numbers, Place Value, Addition and Subtraction to 100, Geometry, Measurement, and Data. Look for practice to come home for each of these topics. We will use a variety of manipulatives to help teach these skills.
Content
We will be covering various Science and Social Studies topics throughout the school year.
One of the biggest changes from kindergarten to first grade is report cards. Please note that students are given percentage grades for Reading, Math, and Spelling (starting the 2nd marking period.) There is easy access to Skyward to monitor grades as well as a variety of helpful resources at www.aasdcat.com.
